A to Z Writing Challenge - G for Gasp

Gasp

Not long ago
Our ginger cat
Smart-Blue
Decided he couldn't
Make the move
To our new house
After a lifetime
Of over 13 years
Happily travelling
Even internationally
On the last day
In the house
He elegantly
Lay down
Centred himself
On a pillow
And breathed
His last breath

We really cannot say
How many breaths
We will take
But we struggle
And fight for more
And more
Frightened
They will run out
Before we are ready
But really
Each breath we take
Is a miraculous gasp
Gifted to us
Moment by moment
No need to fear
It is all planned
If we let go
At the end
We can be as peaceful
As our cat.

A to Z Writing Challenge - F for Fun

Fun

Are we allowed
To have fun
As the world
Is in crisis?
I find myself asking
This morning
Under my tree
Doing yoga
In the sunshine
I turn on my back
And look upwards
Watching the magpie
Above me
Watching me
And warbling back
I can't help laughing
At how absurd
I must look
With my tail
In the air.

A to Z Writing Challenge - E for Embrace

Embrace

As a detail-eyed autistic
With sensory overload
I tend to hide in my small space
But that is not always best
For my system
When I go out into nature
Remove the hunch from my back
And allow my heart to expand
To the horizon
That is when my senses relax
And I say
The world is a safe
And gloriously happy place
And I can embrace
All its possibilities

A to Z Writing Challenge - D for Dread

Dread

I have autism
With executive functioning problems
Going to the Drs
Is hard work for my brain
There are all the germs
And all the procedures.
Because we are currently homeless
In another town
This time my visit
Is to a new Dr
With new procedures
And to top it off
There is the virus
Get procedures wrong
And you get fined
Or die!
Oh and I am taking
My two sons
One with OCD
And I have shortness of breath
Due to asthma
So no pressure!
I arrive with dread
Holding my breath
As I walk through the door
Masked
To save them from me.
I was met with smiles
Kind words
Accomodations
The nurse was a ninja
With the flushots
Chatting quietly
The Dr -who is Doc Martin-
Was relaxed and careful
Renewing my lost scripts
I put in a special
Unknown place
During the move.
I made it to the chemist
With minutes to spare
Before closing.
Had help
Following their new rules
And came out triumphant
With new asthma treatment.
I feel like I have sat an exam
And passed
And if we don't get the virus or flu
It will be an A!

A to Z Writing Challenge - C for Community

Community

One thing I love
Is New Year's Eve
When I get the sense
The whole world is perched
On the edge
Of the new year
Celebrating
The same thing,
At the same time.
I am connecting
Into this sense
Right now during the crisis
To help me see this time
As a time of immense
Togetherness
All the way
Around the world
We are acting
As one
How rare is that?
This is a precious time.

A to Z Writing Challenge - B for Boat

Boat

I am watching
My boat
On its trailer
Waiting
In the rain
Remembering
Those days
Not long past
When we whirred
Up the river
Floating over seaweed
Banging and bouncing
On wind induced waves
Feeling the spray
Soak its seats
Hearing the motor
Roar in the sunshine
The world was free
And we were amongst it.
We are all dreaming
Of our lives
And when they return
We will treasure them!

A to Z Writing Challenge : A for Absence

Absence

I woke
To a power cut
Sudden silence
All machine noise
Stopped
The whir of the fan
The refrigerator hum
And the sudden choking
Of my husband
As his c-pap
Cut out
Slowly the natural sounds
Filtered in
A kookaburra's laugh
Chuckling through
The open blind
And then the power
Came on again
I felt relief
And the ceasation
Of my brain meanderings
About fridges
And solar panels
And batteries
I realised how
Tied we are
To that slim line
It became powerful
In its absence
