Time for a KitKat

Greetings gorgeous friends,
I will be taking a short internet break.

Here is a poem to leave you with:

a breathing space
space to tend to your core
turn down the all firing systems
let them simmer gently
on your breath
carve out space
to feel who you are again
to touch your own face
and smile.

~Jazzy Jack 2018

See you again on the other side.

If you wouldn't mind, could you answer two questions for me?

1. What am I good at?
2. What value does that bring to your life?

Thanks so much.

All my love,
Jazzy Jack

PS Til next time, keep on creating!

Meet the family

Hello there my lovelies!

We have a treat for you today...hopefully.
We decided to video one of our unschooling outings and use the filming and editing as part of our schooling experience.
So we hope to bring you videos on a regular basis and use this as structure for our week, encouraging us out of our cosy home to explore the world a little more.

As it was impossible to avoid using names in the video, we have gone live!
Please meet, Aiden our 11 year old...( formerly known as Mr Actor)

And Miles our 14 year old...( formerly Mr Artist)

Cris also known as Bushy...

And Jack also known as Jazzy Jack !
Collectively we are The Bracks, so yes, I am Jack Brack :-)

We kept the editing loose (!) and allowed the voices of the kids to shine so you can get to know them and their wonderful world a little more.
Hopefully you enjoy visiting the Arboretum, meeting the Australian Magpies and seeing some more of our beautiful country.

So here we go...

Til next time, keep on creating!
Love,
Jazzy Jack

Recycled Christmas

Christmas greetings...well almost. We have just finished school (homeschooling here we come!) and I seemed to be working toward the last day of school as my deadline, so I'm pretty much ready now! Although I'll probably live to eat my words :-)

I promised Beate I would put up a photo of our door wreath. Ta Da!

It is comprised of recycled bent coathanger and a few pretty offcuts of fabric from sewing adventures.

A friend gave me a bag to play with...I'm getting a reputation!

"Here, have my rubbish!" No, just joking.

And here is our recycled bed base garden sculpture tree. Also seen here last year.

Mr Actor is carefully adding the finishing touches while Smart Blue watches his serfs work...although momentarily distracted by potential invader birds at the bird bath and fountain. It's a constant battle, but warrior Smart Blue is up for the task!

Actually he is an indoor cat, but he still manages to bring live mice into our living room from his heroic hunting in his outdoor cage and in the roof. Yes, he prowls our roof space.

Bushy managed to get our "tree" to stand up. I gave up after a morning of struggle deciding I would never be patient enough to balance rocks on the sea shore!

We have also decorated our outside pine tree with the junky baubles, and it is nice to see the sparkle as we drive around the corner.

And gave Noddy our guard sculpture a Snoopy scarf!

Are you too embracing "tacky" this Christmas?

'Til next time, keep on creating,

Love,

Jazzy Jack

Spring makeovers

Hello beautiful people!

As I lie here in bed I can hear my budgies chirping brightly to welcome the new day, which reminds me of our latest adventure.

A few weeks ago I was feeding them and suddenly noticed we only had one budgie. One of our two was missing. Somehow, although I hadn't seen her go, Blueberry our female had escaped!

Sometimes things that happen in life can open up space for another adventure. So the family picked me out a new bird as a surprise (Blueberry had been a Mother's Day gift a few years ago).

Topaz a yellow budgie arrived. As they were buying her they noticed the tiny quails at the bottom of the cage in the pet shop which Bushy particularly liked. So for Father's Day we went and bought some.

In order to house them we had to renovate the bottom of the cage which had been dark with a piece of black plastic across it and the budgies never used it. So we changed that to perspex and now the budgies and the quails live there.

We have a little white and brown spotted one called Snowy(see below) and a brown one you see above, called Rustle.

They were named after the chickens we left behind in New Zealand.

Quails are more like chickens in habit than budgies, but they all get along well so far. We have learnt that the quails don't like wind, so keep a cover over them on windy days so they can venture out or they spend the whole day huddling in their house.

They are entertaining to watch like chickens, and keep us all entranced.

Especially the cat who is convinced he can reach them from his cage.

And the dog has a good sniff every time she passes to check they haven't got out yet!

Aren't they cute?

Another adventure has been building my new tiny garden to screen us from the driveway when we use our courtyard. It uses some secondhand Ikea bedheads for a fence. Baby steps!

I planted butterfly bush, pigface, snowinsummer and some strappy and succulent groundcovers. Now we wait and see which I can kill!

I'm happy with it so far. (Bushy will remove the cable ties when the cement sets!) We are not ruler straight gardeners, and tend to work organically :-) Don't you love the backlighting and shadows?

Another recent project resulted in what Mr Artist calls "Sky Squiggles".

I threaded all my miscellaneous beads leftover from many projects on to wire

and hung them as tree jewels.

They catch the light beautifully. Much better than storing them in a jar in the cupboard!

So with new birds in the aviary, sky squiggles above, the new garden below, the courtyard has had a little makeover. It must be Spring!

Which brings me to my apology. I am not feeling like blogging or writing or even photography. My energies are being spent in more concrete crafts like digging the earth, making objects, and tidying the house. I feel the need to ground myself this season.

Against advice I have removed Mr Actor from school at the moment as he was losing too much weight due to tension trying to stay at school (due to his OCD) causing his IBS to play up. And his compromised immune system just can't cope with all the bugs. This was a hard call, going it alone on instinct against expert advice. Time will tell if I'm right, but it is a lonely scary road!

So I am using most of my blogging time being homeschool teacher and OCD support. When I have a minute I send a photo to Instagram and dig in the earth. It is my sanity place right now, holding me still.

I am flitting around your worlds peeking in the windows and admiring your beauty!

Tweed and velvet both secondhand. Tweed vest made from men's jacket with sleeves removed and back darts inserted.
Bushy has had some fun moments on TV and radio recently talking about the latest report on global tree numbers. Have a look at his post.
And here's a wall squiggle made by a random cord left hanging in our bathroom.
See the face?

Til next time, keep creating and living in your wonderful unique strength!

Much love,

Jazzy Jack

Rise and write no 1. Days 4-7

Good afternoon, good evening or good night my lovelies!
Wherever you roam!
Gorilla jacket, white dress, shirt and earrings - thrifted, knitted necklace - made by me!

Here are the final poems from my Rise and Write Linkup.

A couple of them I set to photos for Instagram.

Day 4. Write about a tree (or another plant) that you see from your window. What kind of tree it is? How tall it is? Does it bear fruit or berries? Is it a home to birds or small animals? If not, could it be a home to mythical creatures? What would you think of it as a child?

I am a tree

who shades a house

my branches have grown long

over the roof

I cover the home

and protect it

my leaves fall in the cold

but my arms never falter

they stand tall

and true

In warmer days

when my leaves grow

I shade the house and its people

from the hot sun

In colder days I drop my leaves

to let the sun in to the house

this is what I do

I see the people who live under me

running around

sometimes they have picnics under me

on the deck

In Autumn I feel silly and mischievous

and drop my leaves in their food

sometimes the small people climb my branches

and jump off

sometimes I want to catch them

when they fall

but my branches aren't quick

so I stand seeming uncaring

there are insects that love my tiny flowers

and in Summer I hum

when they tickle me

I like being a tree

it's a good life

people usually appreciate me

and my people love me

so I stand tall and proud

and love them back

Day 5. Write about an act of kindness that made you look differently at what kindness is and maybe look differently at life. What was the situation? Maybe it was in your childhood, or maybe it happened last week. Maybe you were the person who was being kind, when someone needed it the most, and maybe did not expect it. If nothing comes to mind, invent!

Day 6. Write about your favorite dish as a child. Do you still remember the taste of it? The smell? The texture? Who was cooking it?

Day 7. Write about your morning ritual. You wake up… then what usually happens? Write about how your body feels, what you think about, what you like to do, to eat or drink the first thing in the morning. It does not have to be about you. Write about your character if you prefer – what is their morning routine?

Beeeeeep! BEEEEEEEP!

Oh noooo!

Is that the alarm already?

Do I really have to get up?

But I just got back to sleep!

And now suddenly

the bed that has been

SO ANNOYING all night

is soooo comfortable!

All warm and snuggly

and my pillow feels so soft

The air is so cold

Look you can see my breath

Good grief!

No-one should be expected to get up

in this temperature!

I'll just roll over for a quick snooze

Hmmm, what do I have on today?

Oh, the dog must have heard the alarm

I can hear her jumping at the door

Is that the cat yowling

to be let out of the lounge room?

I'd better remember to take the cello

Did I make lunches last night?

Argh! Brain shut up I need to sleep

Well I suppose I will get up

I can't seem to sleep

and now I need the loo

Ooh, ooh, my toes!

These tiles are freeeezing!

Good morning world

I'm up!!!
